Sunway Group Founder and Chairman Tan Sri Sir Dr Jeffrey Cheah KBE AO paid a courtesy call on H.E. Prof. Dr Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser to the Government of Bangladesh and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, at the Shangri-La Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. The meeting took place during Prof. Yunus’ three-day official visit to Malaysia at the invitation of Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Prof. Yunus, internationally recognised as the pioneer of microcredit and social business, assumed leadership of Bangladesh’s interim government in August 2024.

Senior leaders from Sunway Education Group, as well as Prof. Sibrandes Poppema, President of Sunway University, and Professor Lim Weng Marc, Dean of Sunway Business School, were also present.

Discussions centred on urbanisation and the urgent need for sustainable housing developments in Bangladesh, as well as opportunities for collaboration in education and social innovation.

The meeting also underscored the strong partnership between Sunway University and Prof. Yunus through the Yunus Social Business Centre (YSBC) at Sunway Business School, which Sunway is proud to host. The YSBC serves as a hub for advancing social business, research and community impact initiatives. Additionally, Sunway leaders highlighted the University’s community development and service-learning programmes in Desa Mentari, showcasing how academia can drive positive social change.
