Sunway University and Lancaster University Strengthen Global Research Ties Through Future Cities Co-Design Workshop

Sunway University recently welcomed researchers from Lancaster University for the Sunway x Lancaster Future Cities Grand Challenge 2026: Horizon Europe & Global Grants Co-Design Workshop, reinforcing their strategic research partnership through Future Cities Research Institute (FCRI).
The two-and-a-half-day intensive co-design workshop marked an important step in deepening strategic research collaboration between the two institutions. Centered on the theme of Future Cities, the workshop provided a focused platform for academics to jointly explore funding opportunities under Horizon Europe and other global grant calls while co-developing competitive, interdisciplinary research concepts.
The programme featured leadership addresses by Prof. Abhimanyu Veerakumarasivam, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost of Sunway University, and Prof. Kirk Semple, Director of International Research at Lancaster University. Both emphasized the critical role of international partnerships and transdisciplinary in addressing complex urban sustainability challenges.
Participants engaged in thematic breakout sessions, aligning research strengths, identifying shared priorities, and refining project concepts into actionable proposals. Discussions emphasised digital transformation, sustainable cities, healthy urban communities and resilient urban development — key pillars under FCRI that will shape cities of the future.
This initiative reflects the continued dedication of both institutions to translating collaborative dialogue into tangible outcomes, including joint grant submissions and long-term research partnerships that contribute meaningfully to urban development.
