Sunway University Introduces Three New Early Childhood Education Programmes

Childhood is changing, and so are the careers that shape it.
Sunway University’s School of Education has introduced three new Early Childhood Education programmes, creating new study pathways for those who want to contribute to how children learn, develop and experience the world around them.
The new programmes are:
- Bachelor in Early Childhood Education with Special Needs (Honours), Conventional, September 2026 intake
- Diploma in Early Childhood Education, Conventional, September 2026 intake
- Diploma in Early Childhood Education, Open and Distance Learning, January 2027 intake
Together, the programmes provide diploma and bachelor’s degree pathways, with conventional and online modes offering different ways to begin a professional future in early childhood education.
A STRONGER FOCUS ON INCLUSION
The Bachelor in Early Childhood Education with Special Needs (Honours) brings together early childhood pedagogy, inclusive education and special needs support.
Its curriculum covers areas including Universal Design for Learning, neurodiversity, assistive technology, AI in education, inclusive classroom design, partnership with families and professional experience in early childhood and inclusive settings.
This reflects a growing need for professionals who understand children’s diverse learning and developmental needs, and who can design environments in which every child has a meaningful opportunity to participate.
WIDENING THE VIEW OF EARLY CHILDHOOD CAREERS
The three programmes also give practical expression to the School of Education’s Children Experience Economy initiative.
At its centre is a simple idea: children’s lives are shaped by more than what happens in a classroom. They are also influenced by the services they encounter, the products they use and the spaces in which they learn, play, receive support and connect with others.
The Children Experience Economy does not move away from the foundations of early childhood education. It widens the view of where early childhood expertise can contribute.
This broader landscape includes:
- Early learning and care
- Inclusive support and special needs
- Child development and wellbeing
- Learning design and educational content
- Family and community engagement
- Children’s services and experience innovation
These areas are not presented as a single career pathway. Rather, they demonstrate how knowledge of childhood, development, pedagogy and inclusion can contribute across a wider network of roles, services and settings.
“Early childhood education remains the foundation. What we are widening is the view of where that expertise can contribute. Children’s learning and wellbeing are shaped across many settings, and our programmes should help students recognise both the responsibility and the possibilities within this wider landscape,” said Professor Malissa Maria Mahmud, Dean of the School of Education.
THREE PROGRAMMES, MORE WAYS TO SHAPE CHILDHOOD
The launch represents an important expansion of the School of Education’s academic portfolio and its contribution to the early childhood sector.
The conventional Bachelor and Diploma programmes will welcome their first intake in September 2026, followed by the Diploma in Early Childhood Education through Open and Distance Learning in January 2027. Through these new pathways, the School aims to develop professionals with strong educational foundations, a commitment to inclusion and a wider understanding of the systems and experiences that shape children’s lives.
