Empowering Desa Mentari Youth Through Computational Thinking and Programming

The Sunway Desa Mentari Community Development Programme (SDMCDP) recently launched the second cohort of its Computational Thinking and Programming STEM Workshop, continuing its commitment to empowering children and youth in Desa Mentari through inclusive and future-focused learning opportunities.

Starting in April 2026, the programme engaged 20 lower secondary school students in a series of interactive STEM workshops led by Associate Professor Dr Sim Tze Ying and her team from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Sunway University. The sessions introduced students to coding fundamentals using BBC micro alongside various unplugged learning activities designed to make computational thinking engaging and accessible.

The workshop aims to nurture problem-solving and analytical skills among students by encouraging them to break down complex problems into smaller parts, identify patterns, and develop logical step-by-step solutions. These essential skills not only form the foundation of programming but also support critical thinking and decision-making in everyday life.

Through hands-on and collaborative activities, participants were given the opportunity to explore technology in a supportive learning environment while building confidence, creativity, and curiosity. The programme also seeks to inspire students to see technology as a tool for innovation, self-expression, and future opportunities.

Initiatives such as this reflect SDMCDP’s ongoing efforts to bridge educational gaps and provide meaningful exposure to STEM education within the community. By equipping young learners with digital and computational skills, the programme contributes towards developing more future-ready and resilient youth in Desa Mentari.

The initiative also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education by promoting inclusive and equitable access to quality learning experiences for all.
