Professor Dato' Elizabeth Lee Conferred Honorary Doctor of Laws in Recognition of Transformational Leadership in Education

An outstanding Malaysian education leader, Professor Dato’ Elizabeth Lee, has been conferred the prestigious title of Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) at Lancaster University’s winter graduation ceremonies, in recognition of her exceptional contributions to higher education and global academic collaboration.
Professor Dato’ Elizabeth Lee serves as the Group Chief Executive Officer of Sunway Education, an education conglomerate owned and governed by the not-for-profit Jeffrey Cheah Foundation. Over more than three decades, she has been a driving force behind educational innovation, guiding Sunway Education through a period of remarkable growth and transformation.
Since assuming leadership in 1992, she has overseen the evolution of Sunway from a single institution into a vibrant education group comprising more than twenty institutions, educating over 30,000 students from more than 90 countries. Her visionary leadership has resulted in several national and regional firsts, most notably the establishment of Malaysia’s first international branch campus in partnership with Lancaster University, as well as the pioneering of dual-degree pathways that have expanded access to global education.
In recent years, Professor Dato’ Elizabeth Lee has continued to push the boundaries of educational models. She played a key role in the creation of 42 Kuala Lumpur (42KL), an innovative, project-based coding school that removes traditional barriers to entry by operating without formal teachers, entry requirements, or tuition fees, underscoring her commitment to inclusive and future-ready learning.
The honorary doctorate was conferred by Professor Simon Guy, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Global (Digital, International, Sustainability) at Lancaster University, who paid tribute to her enduring impact on the Lancaster–Sunway partnership:
“Elizabeth has played a leading role in the development of the Lancaster/Sunway relationship since its inception over 17 years ago. Colleagues here at Lancaster remain enormously grateful to her for her wisdom and her friendship, which has led our partnership to be one of the most successful transnational education programmes in the world today, offering a model that is envied by many.”
In her acceptance, Professor Dato’ Elizabeth Lee expressed deep humility and gratitude for the honour:
“This moment is a reminder that success is never achieved alone. It comes from colleagues who support me, my family who believe in me and communities very much like Lancaster which continue to inspire me to be better. It is also a reminder of the values we at Sunway share with this institution, humility, integrity, excellence and the belief in using our work to make a difference in the world.
I accept this honour not just with pride, but with a renewed sense of purpose, to uphold the values and ideals which come with the award, to give back in meaningful ways and to continue walking a path which will inspire others.”
Beyond her leadership at Sunway Education, Professor Dato’ Elizabeth Lee is widely respected as a thought leader in private higher education and has played an influential role in shaping national education policy. Her contributions have been recognised by the Malaysian government through her service on the Board of Advisors of the National Higher Education Research Institute (IPPTN) under the Ministry of Higher Education, as well as her former appointment as a member of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) Council.
She holds a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Education from the University of Cambridge and has received numerous awards and accolades in recognition of her service to education. In 2022, her lifelong dedication to advancing learning and societal development was further honoured when she was bestowed the state title of Dato’ by His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Shah, Sultan of Perak.
This honorary doctorate stands as a testament to Professor Dato’ Elizabeth Lee’s enduring legacy as an education leader whose vision, values, and impact continue to shape lives, institutions, and communities, locally and globally.
