Sunway Desa-Mentari Community Development Programme

On 20 December, Sunway Group and Sunway University worked with the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (chaired by Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah), the PJ Fire Department, and the Desa Mentari community to address three important issues that impact the community.

  1. Crime prevention – addressing the social challenges faced by the community, such as theft, cybercrime, personal safety, and drug addiction.
  2. Fire safety – 59 Desa Mentari residents received their fire safety certificates after one month of training. They acquired new competencies and training to prevent fires and keep the community safe. These competencies will help some of them further their training in the field and find employment.
  3. Sports and other extracurricular activities were promoted among the youth to encourage a healthy lifestyle. Futsal was a main attraction, with the top team winning the Tan Sri Sir Jeffrey Cheah Trophy.

All of the above contribute to the UN SDGs, promoting a safer, healthier, more vibrant, and sustainable Desa Mentari community.

The event was attended by the Datuk Bandar of PJ, as well as senior officers from the Selangor Police Department and Fire Department.

Sunway University is working with the residents and the fire department to set up a community volunteer team to educate residents on fire hazards and serve as first responders to any fire incidents at the Desa Mentari apartments.
