CELS Staff Biodata

Dr. Stephen Hall Associate Professor Dr Stephen J Hall is Director, Centre for English Language Studies (CELS). He was a nation-wide Pedagogic Manager for four years of an in-service teacher training project. Previously, he was a corporate trainer and has managed Language and Communication, Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore. Dr Hall has trained teachers ASEAN-wide and has taught at tertiary, secondary and primary levels. Among his publications and presentations are recent books which focus on English for Tourism. Doctoral research into teacher education (University of Leicester) analyses interaction when introducing Malaysian in-service courses.
Ms. Jeanette Lim Jeanette Lim is the Assistant Director, CELS. She has a Bachelor of Arts with honours, a Diploma in Education and a Master of Education (TESL). Trained as a teacher in Australia, she had taught in two international schools with different curriculum – British and American, and a college in Malaysia. She has conducted English language workshops for students and teachers in Malaysian schools and presented papers at international conferences, as well as in-house seminars and workshops. Her research interests are curriculum development and language testing.
Annyza Tumar is the Head of English for Specific Academic Purposes unit. She holds a Bachelor of Education TESL) with honours from UPM and a Master of Education from Deakin University, Australia. She has over 17 years of teaching and training experience, including seven years of secondary school teaching. Annyza has developed various courses of English for Specific Academic Purposes as well as Communication Skills. She also designed Graduate Training Scheme Programme and English Language Training Programmes for Workers run by the Ministry of Human Resources. Annyza explores ideas which engage and empower students in their learning process so as to develop effective communication skills.
Ms. Jennifer Jennifer Rathabai Kunchiram is the IEP Coordinator. She has taught English in both public and private sectors since 1992. Jennifer has co-authored a textbook and presented her research work in various international conferences. Her first degree is in History and Malay Studies, while she obtained her Masters in ESL.
Ann Rosnida Md Deni is a language and communication lecturer with over 15 years experience teaching English and Communications at tertiary level. She has trained and prepared syllabuses for students, groups from industry and government agencies. Currently, she is pursuing her Doctoral studies on Teacher Learning.
Anuratha Murugagoo holds a Bachelor of Arts (English) with honours and a Master of Science (IT) from USM. Highly passionate in teaching and learning, she is interested in researching the integration of IT in the language learning environment. She currently teaches English for Computer Technology Studies, Study Skills and Business English courses.
Christine Arthur holds a Master of Linguistics from UM. She has great passion in teaching English to students of diverse background especially the under-achievers who need more attention in language learning. Her current field of research is very much related to her interest to elevate the learning abilities of under-achievers.
Mr. Daniel Baghan Daniel Bhagad is a graduate from Leicester University with a Master of Education (Professional Studies). He has been teaching in public and private educational institutes since 1988, and has served as a youth pastor in a church. He is also a corporate and communications trainer.
Ms. Irene Kiew Irene Kiew is keenly motivated to empower second-language learners to use English for effective communication, especially when communicating in an academic context. She believes language is an instrument that, once mastered, can be wielded to great effect. Irene also has a strong interest in computer-assisted language learning.
Ms. Jayne Wong Jayne Wong has vast experience in the area of education, communication and performing arts. She has taught both community groups and corporate institutions here and abroad. Jayne is also a director and drama coach for local community theatres, having appeared in several productions in Australia, Singapore and Malaysia.
Jey Burkhardt, featured by an international literacy periodical as one of the women in literacy for 2004, has worked cross-culturally for the last 17 years in her capacity as a teacher, orthography expert and literacy consultant. Besides her passion for languages, she also enjoys ethnic music, rainforest trekking and baking.
Ms. Julie Liew Ms. Julie Liew received her training in TESL at the SEAMEO Regional English Language Institute, Singapore, the Trinity Guildhall School and City and Guilds of London Institute. Julie has extensive experience in teaching English to international young adult students.
Low Mai Yen has been teaching since 1982 after obtaining her degree in Linguistics, and Diploma in Education. She is a teacher educator, teaching pedagogy to both teacher trainees of primary and secondary levels. She also assisted in the preparation and writing of modules for in-service teachers in the Seychelles.
Mazlin Mohamed has extensive experience in teaching all levels of students. She holds a Master of Education (TESL) and a Bachelor of Education (Language & Literature) with honours. She is actively involved with the marking of MUET Writing papers. Mazlin has conducted corporate training in various industries.
Mrs. Nalini Sankey Nalini Sankey is involved in teaching, setting and moderating examination papers and student scripts for all the Written Levels in IEP. She is interested in the development of reading programmes for learners of English. Nalini was engaged in teaching and training in various secondary schools and colleges for many years.
Noor Ashiqin Mohd Zaini has a Bachelor of Education (TESL) with honours and an LLB with honours. Previously, she worked with Public Bank Berhad for three years. She was also with University Putra Malaysia, teaching English. Currently, she teaches English for Specific Academic Purposes and Study Skills subjects.
Ms. Pax Wong Pax Wong teaches the Written and Oral components in IEP. She has degrees in Economics and Education, a Diploma in Education and a Master of Arts (TESL). Her teaching experience extends to teaching English to secondary and adult learners.
Ms. Sarina Kaur Sarina Kaur is a graduate from Sheffield Hallam University with a Master of Education (TESOL). She has many years of teaching. She teaches the Written and Oral components for the programme. She has taught at the Japanese School of Kuala Lumpur for some years and loves reading and cooking.
Ms. Sarojini Davies Sarojini Davies enjoys teaching Written Level 3 and Oral Level 4 in IEP. Previously, she was attached to Pos Malaysia Berhad for 34 years, serving for almost 12 years as their Public Relations Manager. She majored in English Literature from University Malaya.
Ms. Stella Ong Stella Ong has a Master in Business Administration and is currently pursuing her doctorate in Education. Her research interests are in the area of Reading and Intercultural and International education. A seasoned advertising professional, she has taught advertising subjects to adult learners and English for Business to undergraduates.
Ms. Susie Lau Susie Lau has a Master of English as a Second Language. She has taught English for specific purposes at diploma and degree levels. Some of the subjects are Business English, English for computing and Business Communication. Currently, she is teaching Written Level 2 at CELS. Susie enjoys teaching young adult second language learners from different countries.
Ms. Susila Susila Madasamy has Bachelor of Education (TESL) with honours and a Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics). She has experience teaching EAP and ESP. She has also previously worked as a TESOL teacher trainer. Currently, she teaches English for Specific Academic Purposes. Her research interests are in ELT Methodology and learner autonomy.
Ms. Tan Lay Hong Tan Lay Hong teaches in the Intensive English Programme, while also integrating English language learning materials with the language learning software of the Sunway Multimedia Integrated Language Environment. Lay Hong has taught in China for two years. Her interests are in computer-assisted language learning and thinking skills in writing.
Tan Siew Imm holds a Bachelor of Arts (English Literature) with honours, a Diploma in Education (TESL) and a Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) from Universiti Malaya. Her experience includes teaching at schools, public universities and private colleges, and being an examiner for both oral and written SPM and PMR English. She was also the English Editor at Oxford Fajar.
Teh Hui Lin holds a Master of Arts (English) and a Bachelor of Arts (English) with honours. Previously, she was a graduate research assistant in UKM involved in research on literacy and graduate employability. Her current interest is studies of reflective practice and teacher learning.
Mr. Timothy Wong Timothy Wong has successfully nurtured young adult students from beginner to advanced level. His interest is in cultivating a strong learner-based environment with suitable creative materials. Presently he is researching the use of cohesion in intermediate students’ writing. He is also an IELTS Examiner.
Ms. Yeoh Gim Gaik Yeoh Gim Gaik holds a Bachelor of Science with honours, a Diploma in Education and a Diploma in TESOL. Her experience includes teaching English at Malaysian military schools, University Sains Malaysia, Sunway College, private schools and Methodist College before joining Sunway University as a lecturer at CELS.
Ms. Wong Shin Pyng Wong Shin Pyng holds a Master of Education (TESL) and a Bachelor of Education (TESL) with honours. Prior to joining CELS, she taught in colleges and secondary schools. She is actively involved in research. Her research interests include computer-mediated collaborative argumentation, second language writing, discourse analysis and applied linguistics.
