English for Specific Academic Purposes Unit

The unit under CELS provides continuous language support to all undergraduate diploma and degree students with the overall aim of providing them with critical employability skills, namely communication skills in both oral and written form. This is achieved in the following ways:

Study Skills Workshop Courses on English for Specific Academic Purposes
New students are guided to adapt their learning strategy to suit their current academic requirement, learning how they can be more independent in managing their learning and balancing the use of their time to meet personal, social and academic needs.

These courses provide students with necessary language skills to function effectively in their academic environment as well as in their chosen industry.

At diploma level, students are exposed to field specific terminology, academic reading skills and basic research skills required to carry out small research projects. Students are also taught how to organise and present information in oral and written form. These skills are further reinforced at the degree level. Critical thinking skills are also emphasised.

Communication Skills
This course, offered in the 2nd year of a degree programme, enables students to engage in effective discussion and negotiation with different people for personal, academic and professional purposes. This is achieved through a combination of theory, practical communication activities, speech presentations and analysis of actual communication problems.
