Sunway’s Oh Coyin secures scholarship at MIT

Oh Coyin who completed her GCE A-Levels at Sunway University College has headed to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for further studies while Lee Kin Wai has left for Cambridge University.

“Oh Coyin and Lee Kin Wai were our top students and their acceptance into these prestigious institutions is a natural progression. We are very proud of them” said Dr Wong Yoke Chen, Director of the A-Level programme at Sunway University College. Oh Coyin was Top in the World AS Level for Physics and Top in Malaysia, AS Level for Biology in the Cambridge Outstanding Achiever Awards 2009. In the Cambridge International Fellowship Awards 2010, Oh had the Highest Marks in the World for Physics AS-Level and the Second Highest in the World for Biology AS-Level.

Lee Kin Wai had the Highest Mark (joint) in the World for Mathematics at AS Level and the Second Highest Mark (joint) in the World for General Paper in the Cambridge Fellowship Awards 2010.

Oh Coyin was offered a scholarship to read Science (Pre-Medicine) at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Lee Kin Wai is reading Engineering at Cambridge University.

Oh who shared by email from MIT said “My experience in Sunway was a thoroughly enjoyable one, not too stressful with the right amount of competition that I was able to balance both my studies and extra-curricular activities well. The support from my lecturers and people from the Student Services Department (as well as a bunch of good friends) played a very important role. And yes, A-levels can be a very demanding course, but if you look hard enough, it is also a course where one can get the most out of.

Lee who hails from Melaka was very excited about going to Cambridge and shared “I think what distinguishes the A-Level programme at Sunway from the others is that the lecturers are eager to help and do not hesitate to take their time to explain to us. It also has a terrific mentor-mentee system”.

Another student, Ng Hui Sin is at the London School of Economics studying Actuarial Science on a Bank Negara Scholarship. Ng said “I thank both my math lecturers, Mr. Yong Yau and Mr. Lee Choo Sik for encouraging me to persevere and practice a lot, and they were definitely instrumental in my good A-Level results”.
