Style: Face-to-face with Liyana

(Original article written by SUZIEANA UDA NAGU taken from NST Online)

AT first sight, actress Liyana Jasmay looks too young to be wearing make-up. But the starlet’s petite stature and youthful features — baby-faced and doe-eyed — belie the fact that she will be old enough to vote come March 28.

This month is shaping up to be a good one for Liyana as she not only celebrates her 21st birthday but has also bagged one of the beauty industry’s most prestigious campaigns by being named the new spokesperson for Maybelline New York in Malaysia.

“I’m ecstatic to be the face of Maybelline as I have always been a fan,” says the bubbly girl whose first beauty product was incidentally a Maybelline lipstick which she bought at age 13.

Liyana joins a line-up of “It” girls including singers Datuk Siti Nurhaliza Taruddin and BoA (Korean singer), actresses Fasha Sandha, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Zhang Ziyi as well as supermodels Christy Turlington and Adriana Lima.
It is an apt choice as Liyana embodies the quintessential Maybelline girl — young, confident and a trendsetter.

Malaysia’s Maybelline New York marketing manager Elena Khoo says Liyana’s fresh and versatile look made her the obvious choice for the job.

“Her passion for life and immense talent make her an inspiration to Maybelline’s youthful customers,” adds Khoo.

Liyana first acted in children’s drama Si Lembik at age nine. After appearing in numerous television dramas, Liyana made her first

foray into films with the 2006 blockbuster Castello.

While Castello launched her career, it was Liyana’s portrayal of Lyn, the kampung girl with a secret past in teen drama Kami: The Series and its cinematic spin-off Kami: The Movie that made her a household name.

In Kami, Liyana is mostly bare-faced. But in person, Liyana enjoys dressing up and putting on make-up. To Liyana, make-up allows an actress to get into character.

“Make-up, when used to enhance your best features, can also help boost confidence.”

Having said that, Liyana does not believe that young girls should equate beauty with the amount of make-up they apply.

“Beauty is from within. A person with a good heart is beautiful.”

She encourages girls to embrace their flaws.

“It’s okay if you have pimples. If they bother you, use concealer to camouflage them,” says Liyana, sharing a tip she learned from her make-up artist.

On her day off, Liyana does not mind leaving home with just a slick of mascara and lipgloss.

“Wearing make-up is fun but occasionally you have to let your skin breathe.”

After a flourishing acting career and a lucrative beauty contract, this multitalented girl decided to try a singing career on for size.

She recently inked an album deal and her debut single, the plucky Avril Lavigne-inspired rock number Aku Tak Percaya Cinta has already hit the airwaves.

No matter how busy her acting or music career gets, studies come first for Liyana.

“It helps that my degree is related to my career (she is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Performing Arts at Sunway University College). As my singing career takes off, that means lots of rehearsals and roadshows. In the end, it all boils down to time management.”

Some may say that Liyana is spreading herself too thin but she is not worried.

“I love what I do. With enough discipline and commitment, things tend to fall into place,” says Liyana.
