Honouring Excellence In and Out of The Class
Sunway University College presented 780 students with scholarships in recognition of their academic, sporting and other achievements. The institution has to date given RM42.1 million worth of scholarships from the Sunway Education Trust started in 1997, to honour exceptional individuals every year.

Scholarships that were presented at this ceremony included the Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah Entrance Scholarship and Scholastic Award, Chancellors Scholarship and the Sunway University College Sports Scholarship. Chang Mei Yan, a Psychology undergraduate, received the Chancellors Scholarship, a prestigious scholarship for high achieving students who pursue the Lancaster University validated undergraduate degrees. Only two scholarships are awarded a year and includes a two-week visit (airfare and accommodation included) to Lancaster University. 12 individuals from various programmes received the Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah Scholastic Award valued at RM2,000 each. There were 5 Sunway Sports Scholarship recipients, among them, four national sportspersons; Melvin Chua Bao Quan (national swimmer), Nur Shaheera Shazny Binti Mohd Zaini (national fencer), Nur Hidayah Binti Adam (national bowler) and Mak Pee Kwang Xin (national tennis player).

The Sunway University College-CIMB Sports/ECA Achievers’ Award recognises the individual’s involvement in sports achievement and student activities. This scholarship went to Chan Yung Mun, President of the Sunway Student Council and Low Sze Jein. The Sportsman award went to Melvin Chua Bao Quan and the Sportwoman award to Nor Amilia Binti Muhamad Nor.
The Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah Scholarship Entrance awards are for academic achievers who have shown outstanding results upon entry and there were many recipients in this category. The Scholastic Award is given upon completion of their course with highly commendable results.
The ceremony was officiated by Puan Sri Datin Seri Dr. Susan Cheah, EXCO Member, the Sunway Group and wife of the Chancellor of Sunway University College, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah. The Trust also provides scholarships for the needy such as the Tun Omar Ong Yoke Lin Community Scholarships, of which 10 were given out earlier this year. The defining criteria are that the recipient comes from a home or from the lower income group. The amount given in scholarships this year was RM3,422,862 million including community scholarships.
