A student of Sunway University College has emerged as a Merit Award winner in the MSC Malaysia – IHL Business Plan Competition 2007/2008 in the Business Idea category. Just 16 years old, Emmanuel Yong was left to do the final presentation alone when his buddy Chua King Zen who partnered him in the project initially, left when he completed his studies at Sunway.

The competition was open to students from 31 public and private institutions of higher learning (IHLs). The annual event, organised by Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) in collaboration with the Institutions of Higher Learning (IHLs) attracted 219 entries in the business ideas category and 31 in the business plan category. For the business ideas category, 10 entries were shortlisted as finalists. Emmanuel had to make a 20 minute presentation alone to a panel of judges followed by a question and answer session held at Cyberjaya earlier this year. His business idea, entitled “Hologram Keyboard and Monitor” put Sunway in the top five teams in that category with Multimedia University, Nottingham University, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Utara Malaysia. The award ceremony took place the next day at Putrajaya Marriot Hotel.

Emmanuel, who will be completing his Diploma in Computer Studies this year and is also a Sunway Community Scholar won RM500 and a trophy. He said, “I was pleasantly surprised to win the merit award as all the teams were impressive and it was a close fight among all the competitors”. Emmanuel had a month to prepare for the competition and added “I guess how one presents and answers the questions from the judges counts a great deal too”. Emmanuel hopes to specialise in an area related to web development in the future.

The Hologram Keyboard and Monitor is a device that uses augmented reality technology to combine the main features of a computer system, merging the keyboard, monitor and mouse into one product that provides uninterrupted performance in hardware and reducing frequent maintenance of the keyboard and mouse.
The MSC Malaysia – IHL Business Plan Competition which started in 2004 continues to be the nation’s foremost business plan competition to attract the innovative minds of Malaysia’s new generation. The aim of the competition is to create a new genre of successful technology entrepreneurs (technopreneurs) who take charge of their own destinies and create employment opportunities for the good of the community.
