Three Students Score a First for Sunway – Top World Placings for ACCA

The recent ACCA Graduation at Sunway University College managed to put another feather in Sunway TES cap – 3 top ACCA students whose entire marks surpassed all the world’s candidates. The ACCA is an accounting qualification that is the largest and fastest growing professional accounting qualification from the UK.

“Never before have we had three students achieve this distinctive placing” said Mr Teo Ee Sing, Director of Sunway TES. Sunway TES has produced a consistent stream of world prize winners and Malaysian prize winners in ACCA and CAT annually but prize winners are for particular subjects. The three students who achieved the world placings were chosen based on their overall marks in the June 2007 exam. They are also known as ACCA Affiliates, a term used for the first level towards becoming a fully recognised professional accountant by the ACCA.Image

The three are Tan Yong Chen (gold), Choong Woon Wei and Lim Li Yin (both tied jointly in silver).

Lim Li Yin was also ACCA world prize winner for Paper 3.7 and Tan Yong Chen was ACCA Malaysian prize winner for two subjects, Paper 3.5 and Paper 3.6. Of course, all the three had first class honours for their accounting degree from Oxford Brookes University (OBU).

Tan Yong Chen, who has a string of world and Malaysian prizes under her belt said, ‘I am excited and happy to get this recognition and it was due to the support and encouragement from parents, thorough teaching by caring lecturers, friends she studied with and the good learning environment at Sunway TES”

ImageLim Li Yin echoed similar views “My friends, family and of course the fantastic lectures helped me in this achievement”. Li Yin was wearing a shimmering blue saree as her way of saying thank you to her favourite lecturers Ms P. Geetha and Ms Chandrika Menon, both of whom she admires.

Choong Woon Wei, said “I am delighted, surprised and happy and certainly never imagined this”.

Another beaming graduate was Yap Yin Gwan, Cindy who achieved a first class in her Bachelor of Applied Accounting from OBU. She is the first student under ACCA/Sunway TES Community Scholarship to graduate in accounting from Sunway University College. Community scholars must be needy students from less privileged backgrounds. The Ernst & Young Award for the Best Graduating ACCA Student went to Lim Boon Kim. Recipients are high achievers with an outstanding ECA record.

Sunway TES is the financial courses division which offers the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) and mentoring support for ACCA students who have completed their first year, to fast track to the B.Sc (Hons) in Applied Accounting offered by its partner, Oxford Brookes University. It also offers the prestigious ACA ICAEW.
