Milestone Graduation Ceremony with a Special Diplomate at Sunway University College

The newly installed Foundation Chancellor of Sunway University College, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri (Dr) Jeffrey Cheah conferred degrees and granted diplomas to 538 graduates from the School of Computer Technology, School of Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Management and the School of Creative Arts & Communication. This is the first time Sunway University College is awarding degrees and diplomas which have been developed entirely by Sunway academia. It was also the inaugural graduation since its Foundation Chancellor was installed in the presence of the Sultan of Selangor, HRH Sultan Sharafuddin Shah AlHaj in September last year.

One of the heart string tugging moments of the graduation was when Awangku Mohd Azizul Amri Pingiran Sarpuddin received his Diploma in Computer Studies. Amri, a physically handicapped student and wheelchair bound due to an accident in 1998, hails from Brunei and is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Information Technology (Networking) at Sunway University College.

Amri was upbeat about receiving his diploma and he shared “I am proud to have completed my diploma in computer studies but I am eagerly looking forward to getting my degree at the next graduation ceremony. He added “As I love computers, I found this course interesting. I owe my success to my lecturers and friends who were very helpful which was definitely a “plus” for me”.

When asked if his disabilities were a challenge, Amri said “Thankfully, Sunway University College is a wheelchair friendly institution so it was easily accessible. And also I believe that one should never give up and – when there is a will there is a way – no matter what the obstacles are”.

Degrees conferred were honours degrees in information systems, information technology and multimedia studies. These precede the joint honours degrees that will be offered by Sunway University College in affiliation with its partner, Lancaster University in the UK in the near future. The first cohorts under this arrangement are currently underway in the areas of computer technology, business, hospitality and psychology.
