Paul Ong, Head of Business Development with MIMB Investment Bank Berhad, Kuala Lumpur is the very first applicant from Malaysia to win the Professor Doug Wood MBA scholarship award UK, for the MBA for Financial Managers & Finance Professionals.
The scholarship was announced by the Manchester Business School (MBS), which established the scholarship in recognition of the late Professor Wood’s outstanding achievements.
Paul took up his place in January at the MBS in Sunway University College. The University College is the accredited partner of MBS to deliver its MBA programmes in Malaysia.

“I am thrilled to accept this scholarship and I hope to do justice to Professor Wood’s legacy” said Paul Ong during the presentation of the scholarship award at the Bankers Club in Kuala Lumpur last Thursday.
Paul whose hometown is in Kuala Lumpur comes across as a very career minded and a determined person who enjoys reading and going to the gym. He has been in senior level positions with 18 years of experience in the financial industry.

Commenting on the scholarship, Nick Collett, Lecturer in Financial Management and instigator for the scholarship, said: “Paul was a unanimous decision among the judges, who were impressed by the depth of analysis presented on how one niche retail bank in Malaysia is responding to fierce competition by reviewing its value propositions.
The CEO of MBS Worldwide, Nigel Banister added “The feedback from our tutors is that the first two cohorts of students in Malaysia are performing to high standard. We are delighted that Paul Ong won the scholarship, in open competition against potential students from many other countries”
The scholarship provides £10,800 (approximately RM73,000) for the duration of the MBA and it covers full fees. This award is based on leadership potential, intellectual ability, commitment to public service, and likelihood of “making a difference.
This is the first year the Professor Doug Wood’s scholarship award is given and it is for only one individual in a year and only for those applying for the MBA for Financial Managers & Finance Professionals.
The Deputy British High Commissioner, Mr. Patrick Moody who attended the presentation summed up the occasion “Education is the key among our interests in Malaysia and this event illustrates offshore British education’s great potential. With this being the 50th year of Malaysia’s independence, the best of British meets the best of Malaysian, signaling the start of a journey together”
