Sunway Australian Matriculation Students Sweep Chemistry Awards Worldwide

The Australian Matriculation (AusMat) pre-University students at Sunway University College who graduated recently, achieved commendable results among all the AusMat providers worldwide in Western Australia, Indonesia, Vietnam, China and Malaysia.

Out of the 266 Sunway AusMat students who sat the November 2006 examinations, 30 students (11%) achieved a TER of 99 and were in the top 1% in the world. 90 students (33.8%) had TER above 90 and were in the top 10% worldwide. 4 Sunway AusMat students had an almost perfect TER of 99.90. Overall 55% of all Sunway AusMat students had a TER of 85 and above. There were a total of 20,382 students enrolled in AusMat around the world who sat the same examinations.

Two Sunway AusMat students, Chelfi Chua Zhi Fei and Chong Wen Khang were Special Subject Award recipients for being the highest scorers for Chemistry among all WA schools and overseas providers. Chelfi will be pursuing Pharmacy at the University of Queensland and Chong will be studying Medicine at the University of Melbourne.

Another 8 students, Chew Li Suan, Christina Ooi Chel-See, Ho Yun Ying, Ivy Chiang Kim Ni, Lim Li Ping, Ng Ee Liang, Ravind Singh Pandher and Sharon Wong Leh Ing were in the top 0.5% in the world for Chemistry and earned Special Certificates of Distinction. Sunway AusMat was the only institution with the highest number of Special Subject Awards and Special Certificates of Distinction Awards for Chemistry among all AusMat progarmme providers, in this examination. This was an unprecedented result for Sunway AusMat.

Arjun Sivanesan, Han Yuet Ling and Lim Sue Lyn received Special Certificates of Distinction Awards in Accounting which is in recognition for being within the top 0.5% worldwide for the subject.

Arjun also participated in the 2006 Business Educators of Western Australia (BEWA) Year 12 Accounting Competition in Western Australia and emerged joint First Place winner for his efforts. Lim Sue Lyn was in Second Place. The level of competition was high as it was extended beyond Western Australia to AusMat students in South East Asia as well.

Not surprisingly, Arjun and Han Yuet Ling will be pursuing Actuarial Science at the Australian National University and Lim Sue Lyn will read Economics at the University of Melbourne.

Christina Ooi Chel-See was the top student worldwide for English as a Second Language and she will be studying Medicine at the University of Melbourne. Kong Yue Jin and Afrah Binti Mohd were in the top 0.5% for Malay Advanced and had Special Certificates of Distinction for the subject, among the world providers for AusMat as well.

89% of Sunway AusMat students of the graduating class will certainly qualify for some of the best universities in the world to do a course of their choice. Some of the other courses favoured by top students were Pharmacy and Biotechnology. Overall 32 students have accepted places to read Medicine all over the world and 12 places in Medicine were offered to Sunway AusMat students at Monash University.

The Year 12 Australian curriculum which started at Sunway in 1988 is overseen by the Curriculum Council of Western Australia, on behalf of the Government of Western Australia. One of the strengths of the Sunway AusMat is that 80% of the programme is application based to encourage critical thinking. The world is a classroom and learning is facilitated through the exchange of ideas and views. Students are encouraged to question and their creative and analytical talents are reflected in the high quality of their results and assignments.

Mr Hugh Alguire, International Officer of the Curriculum Council of Western Australia who was at the recent graduation dinner was most impressed with the exceptional forecast results of the students. He said “The good performance of the students may be a reflection of the synergistic relationship which has evolved over the many years between Sunway AusMat and the Curriculum Council”.
