A Bounty of Scholarships & Awards at Sunway
It was a day that will be remembered for a long time for 538 students who were honoured for their outstanding achievements academically, socially and in the sporting arena during the annual scholarships and awards ceremony at Sunway University College this year.
Six (6) top scoring students were RM2,000 richer for being the recipients of the prestigious Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah Scholastic Award, given at the end of a course at Sunway University College. Among those who were present at the ceremony, Wong Voon Han, Hon Shuen and Victor Chin Mou Long consistently produced straight A’s or near perfect scores and were instantly nominated by their programme directors.

After achieving a tertiary entrance ranking of 98.8 in the Australian Matriculation at Sunway University College, Wong Voon Han is now pursuing an engineering degree at Monash University Malaysia.
Hon Shuen, who is about to complete his sophomore year at the American Degree Transfer Programme at Sunway University College achieved a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.0. He plans to continue his Biomedical Sciences degree at one of the top ranking universities in the U.S soon under the programme.
Victoria University Bachelor in Computer Science graduate Victor who pursued his degree at Sunway University College, outshone his peers with 9 high distinctions in his final year. Very soon after graduating in December last year he was employed as a Sunway SMART programme management trainee. Victor is now a Technical Consultant at Sunway Business Application, the technology arm of SunInc. “Sheer hard work, patience and persistence were the essential ingredients that saw me through” said Victor and this was unanimously agreed to hands down by Voon Han and Shuen.

Five superstar sportspersons received the Sunway University College Sports Scholarship Award. The award provides a 25% and 50% waiver for state or national level representation respectively. Among those present at the awards were Ms Chong Yie San, an “A” Level student who played basketball for the state of Kedah in various inter-school and open tournaments and Ms Ong Sher Lyn, a Monash University Foundation Year student who represented the state of Johor and Malaysia at world competitions in her sport of taekwondo.
The Sunway University College – CIMB Bank Berhad (formerly known as Bumiputra-Commerce Bank) Extra Curricular / Sports Achievers Award went to four deserving students who contributed their time and efforts to Sunway University College as exemplary members of the Sunway University College Student Council, various committees and in sports. Xander Chong Tze Siang, an ‘A’ Level student and Canny Lam Siok Kheng, pursuing a computing degree at Sunway University College, both achieved the ECA award.
The Sportsman Award went to Muhammad Izzat Bin Mohd Hayazi, an ‘A’ Level student who represented Sunway University College in tennis and football and was President of the Football Club. The Sportswoman Award went to Khrystabelle Charmaine Lai, an ACCA student who gave her best in taekwondo and tennis for Sunway University College. She was President of the Sunway University College Tennis Club.
Another 523 students from as many as 11 different degree, diploma and pre-university programmes received the Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Entrance Scholarship Awards ranging in value from RM1,000 to RM 8,000, half and full scholarships depending on academic grades and performance. These awards are based on good results by students prior to their entering a course at Sunway University College.
Scholarships and awards are given out on a yearly basis and are dispersed from the Sunway Education Trust Fund, which is governed by a Board of Trustees who ensure that the funds are used according to the original purpose of the Trust since its instatement : to assist the community, for improvements to the infrastructure of the Institution and for research.
All surpluses earned by Sunway University College are channelled to the Trust making Sunway University College one of the few private institutions in Malaysia operating uniquely under a Trust.
This year’s scholarships and awards amounted to RM1.9 million bringing the amount dispersed to date over the years, to a staggering RM23.9 million.
