Sunway University College (Sunway) Installs Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah as Foundation Chancellor
Tan Sri Dato’ Seri (Dr) Jeffrey Cheah Fook Ling, Founder of the Sunway Group was officially installed on 19 September 2006 as the University’s Foundation Chancellor, the first time ever for a corporate chief to be given a chancellery position.
During the ceremony steeped in tradition and witnessed by honorary and distinguished guests, members of the faculties, scholars and staff, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah was bestowed the honour in the presence of HRH Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah AlHaj.
Renowned for his active and distinguished business career, Tan Sri Jeffrey has demonstrated a long time interest in higher education. He founded Sunway University College as it was known in 1987 which began with 200 students. Today, 19 years on, Sunway University College has a total student population of 7,000, pursuing different academic programmes or courses.
The coat of arms of Sunway University College with the motto “Fortuna Eruditis Favet” which means Fortune Favours the Prepared Mind was also unveiled at this prestigious ceremony by H.R.H Sultan of Selangor. The Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Jarlath Ronayne made a statement relating to the Grant of Arms to Sunway University College by the College of Arms, London and also described the devisal.
Under Tan Sri Jeffery Cheah’s wise, astute leadership, Sunway University College provides a comprehensive education system catering to fulfill the aspirations of today’s students as well as to the future needs of the Nation.
“I am most honoured to receive this appointment as Foundation Chancellor at Sunway and give my assurance that the entire enterprise of Sunway University College will be engaged in setting milestone objectives and developing the plans to achieve these objectives.”
Regarding the future strategy of the institution, he said, “We have to have a global outlook and leadership in competing in the international arena, and we must continually benchmark against international standards.”
