Two Valedictorians for the ‘A’ Levels at Sunway

Sunway University College Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level programme has had an excellent track record in its yearly academic results. In the June 2005 examinations, 33% of its students obtained 3 ‘A’s or better and five of its top students were accepted into Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

Recently, during the graduation ceremony in June this year, two students who were exceptionally outstanding, were given the honour of being the class valedictorians. “Both outshone all the other students and we just decided that there will be two valedictorians this year” said Mrs Hor Poh Choo, Director of the GCE ‘A’ Level programme at Sunway University College.

Andrew Hoh Tjun Mee is one who constantly sets high standards for himself. Hoh achieved ‘A’s in all his ‘A’ level subjects. Not only is he a confident, high calibre student, but he enjoys the challenge of striking a balance between studies and co-curricular activities.

This was aptly demonstrated when he scored 10 ‘A’s in his SPM while proving himself to be a talented debater. Hoh represented his school in interschool debates and was the best speaker for the state of Negri Sembilan. At Sunway University College he was president of the Archery Club and the ‘A’ Level Society. Hoh will be pursuing Accounting and Finance at the London School of Economics, UK.

Qu Hsueh Ming, another straight ‘A’ student who shared the honour with Hoh took an unusual combination of Mathematics, Further Mathematics, General Paper, Chemistry and Economics for his ‘A’ Levels. Described by his teachers as intellectually adventurous and perceptive, Qu is also a gifted writer, having won many international writing competitions. He emerged Champion in the Oxford and Cambridge Essay Writing Competition last year. He was also a shortlisted finalist for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award for Young Malaysians this year.

Qu was the Secretary of the Sunway-Monash Chess Club and a member of the ‘A’ Level Society. For his brightness, he was admitted to MENSA as a member recently. It’s no surprise that he will read Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford University.
