Sunway Student Makes Magic in Prague

Four hundred and fifty players flocked to The Czech Republic in May to compete in Magic: The Gathering® (MTG) Pro Tour Prague 2006, one out of a series of tournaments held worldwide for the collectable card game. Sunway University College (Sunway University College) student, Terry Soh, climbed to an impressive 11th ranking, raking in remarkable winnings of USD 6, 000 (RM22, 000).

Soh, currently undergoing a pre-university programme in Sunway University College, is Malaysia’s own sensation in MTG arena. He started playing the game since he was 12 years old. “I enjoy the game because it allows me to learn the art of communication with other people, to build confidence and to travel around the world,” Soh enthused.

“Each time I travel to a Pro Tour, I learn more about the game and the community,” he added. Last year, Soh won the Magic Invitational Tournament, landing him the coveted prize – the right to design an MTG card.

Soh fuels his winnings from MTG tournaments into his other passion – cars. Few teenagers can claim that they paid for their wheels without financial help from their parents. This 19-year-old lad, however, drives a Honda Integra DC5, which he bought and modified using his own earnings.

After completing his Canadian International Matriculation Programme (CIMP) in Sunway University College, in which he is taking mostly business subjects, Soh intends to take a few months off to pursue MTG professionally. Considering the high payout of these tournaments, he can probably afford to add a few more cars to his collection after this.
