Sunway University College Tops Inter-Varsity Taekwondo Tournament

In the first ever Inter-varsity martial arts tournament organised recently, Sunway University College successfully defeated five other higher institutions to reach the top of the medals tally with 7 golds, 7 silvers and 6 bronzes.

The standard of competition was intense with many participants impressing the judges as they competed in good form. INTI College (5 golds, 5 silvers and 6 bronzes) were the runner up and Asia Pacific University College of Technology & Innovation (UCTI) came in at third place (4 golds, 4 silvers and 4 bronzes). The other institutions who took part were Kolej Damansara Utama (KDU), Sepang Institute of Technology (SIT) and Monash University Malaysia.

All the students who represented Sunway University College are members of the Taekwondo Club of Sunway University College. The members of this club, comprising students only and membering more than fifty, train every Wednesday and Friday evenings. The students proved that the regular training sessions they had undergone and a strong determination is a factor for the good performances. “Poomsae”, which is a sequence of specific actions and “Sparring” were the two events of the tournament.

Taekwondo instructor Tony Lee who holds a black belt with 6 dans and others from the Malaysian Taekwondo Federation were the judges for the tournament. Staff Adrena Sicilza Abdul Rahim from the Professional Courses Department, was the Technical Advisor for the event.

Sunway University College students were involved as timekeepers and made up the majority of the organising committee, showed they were capable of hosting a memorable event that effectively promoted this sport among the student community.
