Top Sunway University College Graduate wins Ernst & Young Award

22 year old Lai Kar Jun, an outstanding student at Sunway University College, was selected for the Ernst and Young Best Graduating ACCA student Award at the recent ACCA/CAT Graduation ceremony. And quite rightly so because his track record tells it all.

Lai outshone 110 others who sat for the Professional ACCA examination. From Kuala Lumpur, he is an accomplished all-rounder and matched all the criteria required for the award both academically and in off-campus activities.

Packing a punch in more ways than one, this Taekwondo black-belt holder was an 8 A student in the SPM and went on to achieve a Diploma in Business Studies followed by a Diploma in Law prior to attending Sunway University College. He achieved a First Class Honours in Applied Accounting from the Oxford Brookes University (OBU), an innovative programme for ACCA students who complete Part 2 of the ACCA. The programme is offered at Sunway University College.

In the sporting arena, Lai earned his lifeguard license in 2003 and is an ace at table tennis emerging the champion in the Men Singles and first runner up in the Men Doubles at Sunway University College’s Mini Sports Day in 2005

For his efforts, he received the Ernst & Young Best Student plaque and RM1000.

Currently working as an Associate in Assurance and Advisory Business Services at Ernst & Young, Lai pinned his success on his ability to juggle studies while involving himself in various clubs and societies.

Ms Elizabeth Lee, Executive Director, Sunway University College, described Lai’s academic performance as simply ‘amazing’ and said “to qualify for this award the recipient must not only be academically sound, but also actively involved in extra curricular activities.

She explained that the passing rates for the ACCA core papers at Sunway University College consistently stands at 61 per cent, compared to the world pass rate of 51 per cent.

Sharing the limelight with Lai was Ms Ang Fei Ling, an ACCA World Prize Winner for Paper 2.5, Financial Reporting, under Part 2 of the ACCA.

The Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) World Prize Winners included Ms Chan Yi Munn for Paper 3, Mr Foo Wai Lun for Paper 4 and Ms.Tan Yong Chen for Paper 7/8.

Students for the ACCA Malaysian Prize Winners were Ms Chong Pei Ven, Paper1.1, Mr Ang Kar Hseng, Paper 2.4, Ms Chew Mui Khim, Paper 2.6 and Ms Goh Yen Shi for Paper 3.3.

Present at the ceremony were Puan Sri Datin Seri Dr Susan Cheah, EXCO member of the Sunway Group.

Since 1996, there have been 31 World Prize Winners and 134 Malaysian Prize Winners under the ACCA and CAT programmes. Sunway University College has again maintained its Premier Plus Status accreditation awarded by ACCA, United Kingdom which it has held since December 2003.
