Sunway Students Ace AusMat Exams

Sunway University College is one of the largest and longest running providers, since 1988, of the Australian Matriculation (AusMat), an internationally recognized pre-university programme offered by the Curriculum Council of Western Australia on behalf of the Government of Western Australia.

Continuing the fine tradition of outstanding results among the worldwide providers of AusMat, it was another year of excellence for the students of AusMat at Sunway University College for 2005.

Seven students out of the graduating class of 187 obtained a Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) of 99 and above while 14 students were above 98. Sunway University College AusMat students outdid their peers worldwide by winning the Certificate of Distinction in Chemistry for the second year running and the Certificate of Distinction in Accounting for the second time in three years. Sharmila Sathianathan was awarded the Chemistry Certificate of Distinction and Yeoh Xiao Jing clinched the Accounting Certificate of Distinction Award.

As a whole, 39% of Sunway University College AusMat students were in the top percentile for the Tertiary Entrance Exam, which is provided and closely moderated by the Curriculum Council of Australia, in the world. 22% of Sunway AusMat students are in the top 10% and 39% of students are in the top 15%.

The brightest spark among the students and who obtained the highest TER of 99.8 was Nik Muyassarah binti Nik Din, a Public Service Department (JPA) scholar. Nik Muyassarah was awarded with the Shield of Excellence for her outstanding results as well as for her involvements in extra-curricular activities. Nik was voted by students and teachers as “AusMat Queen” for her positive influence on the students because of her personal qualities. She has been described by teachers and fellow students, as friendly, polite and helpful.

Nik was closely followed by the second highest TER scorer, Liew Shan Kuan who obtained a TER of 99.75. The other five students who were within the top 99 TER were Ng Ai Yin, Badrul Hishambinkasmiran, Sharmila Sathianathan, Yeoh Xiao Jing and Trishvin Kaur. Students in the 98 TER range were Lau Lee Ling Christine, Wong Voon Han, Ng Chin Kiat, Vivian Chai, Muaz bin Nor Azmi and Nik Mohd Farid and Hew Zhen Wei, who also received the Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah Scholastic Award in 2005.

Nik Muyassarah has opted to read medicine at Melbourne University, Australia. Seven students among the graduating class have been offered places to do medicine at Monash University, Malaysia and seven other students have qualified for scholarships at Monash University, Malaysia.

The high quality of the Sunway AusMat programme is recognised and endorsed by the Malaysian government, who have through the Public Service Commision or JPA provided 27 scholarships to students to pursue AusMat at Sunway University College. Sime Darby, a corporate giant in Malaysia, has also provided 5 students with their Sime Darby scholarships. This is indeed an honour and speaks volumes for their trust in Sunway’s capability as an educator and provider of the AusMat programme.

Elizabeth Lee, Executive Director of Sunway University College said that “The holistic nature of the AusMat programme at Sunway includes less of an exam oriented mode of study. Many students have to actively partake in many curricular activities during the year and together with a steely determination have reaped rewards in their exams”.
