  Friday - 2nd November 2007

December 2007 was a special day for the staff and students of Sunway College Johor Bahru as it was the grand Official Opening ceremony of the campus. Months of preparation was rewarded with lovely weather on that day. Sunway College Johor Bahru was honoured to have the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Y. B. Datuk Ong Tee Keat, to officiate the ceremony.

The guest-of-honour was warmly received with a unique percussion performance; starting with a spectacular piece by The Qian Qiu Drums Troop , followed by the Urumi Melam Indian Drums. In true Malaysian “muhibbah” spirit, the welcoming ceremony was rounded up by the vibrant sounds of the Malay “kompang” and our honourable guest was accompanied with 4 Sirih Jujung ushers. Guests were also entertained by a group of professional dancers, who presented a contemporary silhouette dance.

In his speech, YB Datuk Ong Tee Keat lauded the efforts of the Sunway Education Group in its quest to provide quality education for all, backed by a trust fund set up by its founder, YB Tan Sri Datuk Seri Dr Jeffery Cheah.

As noted in his speech, Mr Lee Weng Keng, CEO of Education & Healthcare Division of Sunway Group highlighted that the Sunway Trust Fund has thus far offered more than RM37 million in scholarships in a span of 20 years. Following Sunway University College’s history of producing top achievers, Sunway College Johor Bahru has also produced world prize winning students, among them, Ang Ju Li, who emerged at the top of the Cambridge International Exams in Mathematics for 2007.

The opening ceremony was followed by a tour of the RM 30 million purpose built campus, which boasts a two-storey library, student lounge areas and state of the art computer and science laboratories.

The event was concluded with the presentation of a souvenir to YB Datuk Ong, who later took time to chat with students of the college.
