A Night To Remember: Graduating MUFY
In the presence of almost 300 students graduating from the Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY) Class of 2014, valedictorian Mohamad Rafique said, “As we look around here today at all the people who have helped make us who we are, it could be your friends, lecturers, or someone special that you’ve met throughout the year, I know it feels like we’re saying goodbye but we will all carry a piece of each other into everything we do next......to remind us of who we are, and the memories that we share. Having built new relationships, starting over, MUFY has given me more than just friends.

MUFY has given me a family. Cherish them. Tonight, go to the ones that mean most to you and thank those who have been very dear to us all.”

With MUFY celebrating its 15th year in Sunway, Dr. Elizabeth Lee, Senior Executive Director, Sunway Education Group mentioned MUFY is the largest and most established provider among all providers in Australia, China, Malaysia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Having approximately 1,000 students enrolled in the MUFY programme, Sunway is possibly one of the largest university foundation programmes in the country. Truly international in its scope of curriculum and recognition, MUFY’s enrolment has students coming from over 40 countries including Germany, Egypt, Philippines, USA, Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Singapore and Indonesia.

Taking the opportunity to congratulate the graduating students, Lee Thye Cheong, Director of MUFY was convinced the graduating students will continue to keep the MUFY banner flying high and help to create a better place for the lives they will touch.

Acknowledging the hard work and dedication of his academic colleagues, Lee personally thanked the lecturers for believing in the students and steering them towards contributing positively to the community. With the trust and confidence of the parents in MUFY, the graduates are now ready to face life in university. Immortalising the year of 2014, Mohamad Rafique thanked the lecturers for being the real heroes of tonight’s graduation as the beloved lecturers was the push they needed to fly. Encouraging the MUFY graduates, Dr Elizabeth Lee asked all that evening to go ahead and take that next step as your whole life is ahead of you. Be adventurous!

Challenging Young Minds, Pushing Boundaries
Students from Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Malaysia compete for the coveted scholarships

The inaugural Monash Investment Challenge 2013 took place on 20 July with twelve teams from various local and international academic institutions taking part in a race to win the title “best trader of the day”. It was a busy day for the selected pre-university students housed in the simulated Trading Lab. One of a kind in Malaysia, this simulated trading facility was conceptualised to encourage experiential learning for business students on campus.

The Grand Prize, 50% Tuition Scholarship from the Monash University Sunway campus  for undergraduate studies went to Chan Fang Lekand Grace Ong Sing Ling, both from the Monash University Foundation Year Programme (MUFY)– these students had the highest cumulative sum average of returns from the investment challenge.

MUFY is the academic bridge for students to transition successfully into undergraduate studies at Monash University, other branches of Australian universities, as well as private academic institutions in the country.

The first prize went to Chang Fang Lekand Aleeza John also from MUFY. The next four winners represented Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas: Yue Sue San and Tan Chin Ye in second place; and Tay Zhi Cong and Fun Ming Yee in third place.

The first, second and third prize winners were awarded trophies and cash prizes of RM2,000.00, RM1,500.00 and RM1,000.00 respectively.  Head of School of Business, Professor Christina Kwai Choi Lee presented the awards and prizes to the students.

Chang Fang Lek and Grace Ong Sing Ling, the grand prize winners both shared that their experience in the Trading Room was invaluable. Watching the excitement on television and getting information from books alone was not enough – the “real life” experience got their adrenaline going and boosted their analytical thinking.

Aleeza John, one of the first prize winners was still in awe at the close of the event. “The Trading Room was cool! I was so surprised and impressed by the setup. So real!” she said with excitement.

“We had a great time learning and competing with the rest of the teams. It has been a really fun and exciting day on campus!” Yue Sue San and Tan Chia Ye shared happily.

Third prize winner Tay Zhi Cong said that his experience trading in the challenge trumped his previous experience in another challenge in the past. His keen interest in stock trading specifically is encouraged and supported by his father. Fun Ming Yee on the other hand, shared that the challenge was her first time exposure to stock market trading and that she had no prior experience or deep knowledge of the subject. She was grateful that the faculty presented the scenarios in detail and were on hand to offer assistance throughout the challenge.

Students from the Asian International School in Sri Lanka,  Adil Chatoor and Veluppillai Pathmanathan shared that they found the challenge tough and tricky and that it encouraged them to think analytically. Having garnered useful information from Head of Accounting and Corporate Governance, Professor Ferdinand A. Gul who was present throughout the competition, the students were intent on making their way back to Monash University Sunway Campus (MUSC).

Students pre-selected by their respective schools to participate in this challenge have an interest in pursuing a business degree – they are adept in mathematics and have a serious fascination with numbers in general.
